âMr. Grant, thank you for coming.â The thin, graying man in his late seventies introduced only as the Employer, sat across from me and smiled pleasantly. He reminded me of someoneâs grandpa, and he damn sure didnât look like he was associated with any killers for hire. Then again, I damn sure didnât look like a lawyer who had worked for a crime family for the past fifteen years, so who was I to talk?
âThank you for meeting with me.â I picked up the glass of brandy the waiter had placed in front of me and took a sip. âAntonio spoke highly of you.â
âHe spoke the same about you.â He nodded toward me. âSo, how can I be of service?â
âIâm not sure how much Antonio told you, but I have a job that needs to be taken care of.â I got straight to the point in an effort to show him that I was serious and there was no need for small talk. I was ready to get down to business. No regrets.
âHe didnât share any specifics, which is customary. Our business is our business. I will not discuss it with Antonio or anyone else,â he said.
âThatâs very comforting.â I reached into my breast pocket and removed an envelope, placing it in front of him. âIâm aware that there is a substantial cost, and Iâm prepared to take care of that now.â
The Employerâs eyes went to my hand. He shook his head. âMr. Grant, I think you misunderstand.â
âDid I do something wrong?â Why the hell was this man refusing the cold hard cash Iâd brought? I looked around. Had Antonio sold me out to LC?
âI donât handle these types of things anymore. Iâve recently retired.â
âIâm sorry. I didnât know.â I exhaled, now frustrated and disappointed. I was back to square one. At this point, I was almost tempted to kill Darylâs ass my damn self. âI guess I came all this way for nothing.â
âNo, thatâs not totally true,â he replied. âYes, I am no longer the employer for the guild. However, I still may be able to provide you with some assistance.â
âHowâs that?â
âMy job has been split up between many operatives. I can introduce you to one of them, who can provide you with the service you desire if youâd like.â He reached down and picked up the envelope, sliding it into his jacket. âFor a finderâs fee, of course.â
âOf course.â I gave him a half smile. âHow soon can you set up a meeting?â
âIs now a good time? They happen to be sitting at the bar.â I glanced over to where three huge, scary-looking men sat talking to an attractive woman who looked very out of place. She could be either a hooker or some undersexed Upper East Side housewife looking to get laid before she picked up the kids from soccer practice.
âExcuse me a moment. Iâll be right back.â He stood up and walked over to the bar.
I watched as he spoke to the group for a minute, then he picked up a few peanuts from a bowl on the bar before walking back alone.
